Emma says - This morning Miss Hammond, Josh and I were outside looking at the balloons. I was counting how many there were and there we 32! They came all the way from the Hamilton Lake and flew east across the back of our school. Balloons are big bubbles that run by fire and hot air. They also have baskets that hang off them so people can fly in them.
Welcome to our blog. This is a space where Room 9, a year 4 class from Hamilton, New Zealand show you what they have been learning.

LIfe Education Trust.
WE are lucky to have the benefit of the life education trust visiting our school for the next few weeks. We will be learning all about the brain, how it works and what we can do to keep it in learning order. Shortly we will get a booklet to work from at home.
Dallas says - I wanted to see big Harold, but Michelle said he was too big to go in the caravan and she wasn't going to clean up after him.
Byron Says - Harold says eat healthy so you you can sleep and be healthy.
Emma Says - Michelle taught us lots of exercises how to use both sides of your brain. I found them sorta kinda a little bit hard and a little bit easy.
Rongo Says - i thought it was a real giraffe.
Autumn Says - i like that bit where we saw the brain that controls the caravan. It even has twinkling lights and stuff! the brain had a light in it that when it talked it lite up. It could even talk and sing!
Authors Visit
Today we were visited by the Author of "The Millenium Tree" Marnie Anstis.
Ella Says - Some people gave her questions and she gave us some really good answers. We asked how many books she has written, which is one. We asked her what her favourite book was and she said it was this one. When she was little she use to write poems and books and she showed them to us. They had lots of rhymes and things in them. One of her poems was about a pig!
Heath Says - I Really enjoyed listening seeing the pictures because they had lots of interesting pictures. There are pictures of mountains, a huge tree.
Shakayla Says - When Mr Oh asked her what tips she had for us budding writers. She said we have to read lots and lots and lots! Literally anything you see.
Ethan Says - Don't read easy books though because then you wont learn new ideas.
Rongo Says - I liked when she said how she made the book. At the end I had to do the Kaia because we needed to sing a song at the end. We sing a song for visitors to welcome them and i had to lead it. I got just a little nervous but then I sang with Whaea Sandra, and Miss Hammond.

Tabloid Sports
Miss Hammond filling the bucket | s |
Yesterday was Wet 'n' Wild Tabloid Sports Day. This is when we all split up into our 4 house teams and then into teams to compete for house points. Of course Pukeko was always going to win, so we were not that worried about it all.
This is Miss Hammond's activity. It was like a fire man drill back in the early 1900's. There was a bucket at the start and one at the end. We had to move a little bucket (which accidentally hadholes in it!) from one end of our team to the other. The first team to over flow the bucket. Will a little 'help' PUKEKO won everytime! Hehe
Ethan Says - First my group went to the
school pool with Mr cheshem his game was that you had to put bottle cap
in the bucket and the first one to get them most in wins. My team
WON!!!! GO PUKEKO
The next game was going to Miss Robinson and you had to throw water balloons into a basket without breaking them. MY TEAM GOT 47 points for PUKEKO!!!

This is Rhylee doing the gumboot relay. You had to fill the gum boot with water and then walk it to another bucket to empty it. Seriously ew yuck grose!

Pukeko Writing
We have also been writing about Pukekos.
We noticed that our writing was not very entertaining when we read it, so we thought we would explore ways to make it more entertaining. We came up with the idea of looking at the words we choose to use. Below are some sentences from our poems where we used activated nouns (a fancy way of saying objects that do something.) These make our writing juicier!
Long pointy tail swishes like crazy - Ethan
Long crooked legs run as people walk past - Ella
Bright red eye blink every 3 minutes - Emma
Orange legs are very long with bendy knees - Autumn
Shiny blue feathers sparkle in the sun - Reef
Skinny long legs walk in swamps - Andre
Red eyes look for food - Yasmin
Long fluffy feathers warm in the cold times, like
winter - Piper
Bright red eyes look evil like an evil pukeko - Marie
Pointy beak move forwards and backwards - Tisha
Chopped tail twitches when its itchy - Cam F
Dark blue feathers warm in winter - Ryan
Pukeko feathers are smooth - Byron
Do you like them?
In the comment box can you give us another example?
Pukeko
Ethan Says - today we were learning about proportion by drawing pukekos. First we drew the curve of the body and then we did the tummy and the beak. We started to do the legs and the outlines. Next we are going to use vivid to draw the outlines and the use pastels to colour them in.
Why are we doing pukekos you might ask?
Jake Says - Because we are in Pukeko House, Blue House, which is one of the groups our school is split into. There is also Red - Weka, Green - Kereru and Yellow - Kea. We compete with each other at different events to earn house points. At the end of the year if our house wins we get a trophy and pleasure of winning!

Swimming
This term we have been really lucky to have been able to swim in the school pool twice a week. Here is a little video of some of the skills we have learnt. We are lucky to be able to have swim safe lessons in term 4!
More about our Metaphor
Chase Says - This is our class metaphor and we follow it so we know which street to go down.
Ethan Says - we have to be footsy with our virtues and choose the right street. it means we be good and do what the teacher says and so we can learn.
Neil Says - We always use our virtues so we can have a fun life and choose the right street
Ryan Says - Just in case people don't know what our virtues is we are going to post them shortly! Watch this space.
This is Ella with her footsy feet and foost MO.
Ella Says - Do you like my Moustache? I am the Lorax from Dr Seuss. All of our class shows the virtues.
Miss Hammond Says - Our Virtues Metaphor is linked to "Oh, the places you'll go," By Dr Seuss. I have loved this story since I was little. It represents the good and bad that life can throw at you and puts an emphasis on it being the readers responsibility to choose the right streets and not be afraid or scared if you don't. This for me sums up life and teaching.
